One of the best parts about building a pole barn is how customizable it is. From size and layout to doors, windows, and finishes, the options are nearly endless. But with so many upgrades to choose from, how do you know which add-ons are actually worth the money and which ones might not be?

At D Cross Barn Co., we’ve helped hundreds of customers design pole barns that fit their needs and budget. Here’s our take on the add-ons that deliver real value and a few that might not be worth it unless they serve a specific purpose.

Worth It: Insulation

Whether you’re building a workshop, garage, or barndominium, insulation is one of the smartest add-ons you can choose. It helps regulate temperature, protects your building from condensation, and can reduce energy costs if you plan to heat or cool the space.

Worth It: Concrete Floors

Concrete may be more expensive upfront than a dirt or gravel floor, but it pays off in the long run. It adds durability, makes cleaning easier, and improves usability for everything from parking vehicles to setting up workbenches.

Worth It: Extra Overhead or Roll-Up Doors

If you’re using your barn for equipment, trailers, or recreational vehicles, an extra overhead door can make all the difference in convenience and access. It’s also a big selling point if you plan to resell down the line.

Worth It: Lean-Tos or Covered Extensions

Need extra covered space for livestock, firewood, or storage? A lean-to is a cost-effective way to expand your usable area without enclosing more square footage. These add-ons often pay for themselves in practicality.

Not Always Worth It: Skylights

While they add natural light, skylights in metal buildings can sometimes lead to leaks or require more maintenance over time. If you want extra light, consider translucent wall panels or additional windows instead.

Not Always Worth It: Overbuilt Loft Space

Lofts can be great for storage or even a sleeping area in a barndominium, but unless you’re truly going to use it, the cost of framing and finishing a large loft might be better spent elsewhere.
