One of the most important parts of any pole barn isn’t what you see above ground; it’s what holds it up from beneath. When poles shift, or foundations settle unevenly, it can lead to serious structural problems down the road. Fortunately, with proper planning and smart building techniques, these issues are completely preventable.
At D Cross Barn Co., we take foundation work seriously. Here are our top tips to help you avoid pole shifting and ensure your barn stays strong and stable for decades.
1. Start with the Right Soil Conditions
Soil type plays a huge role in foundation performance. Loose, sandy, or clay-heavy soils can shift and settle over time, especially when they’re wet. If your soil isn’t ideal, posts may lean or move.
Tip: If you’re unsure about your soil, consider a basic soil test. This allows us to tailor the depth, spacing, and type of foundation to fit your land, whether that means going deeper, using concrete piers, or compacting the soil properly before installation.
2. Use Properly Treated Posts
Rotting or weakened posts are a major cause of pole shifting. Posts that aren’t rated for ground contact will break down faster in Oklahoma’s moisture-rich conditions.
Tip: We use pressure-treated, ground-contact-rated posts that are built to resist rot, pests, and decay. You can also choose options like post sleeves or elevated concrete pier foundations for extra durability.
3. Ensure Correct Post Depth and Anchoring
Poles that aren’t buried deep enough or set without concrete backfill are much more likely to shift or lean over time, especially under wind load or heavy roof snow.
Tip: We bury our posts deep, following engineering guidelines based on your soil and wind zone. We often use concrete footers and backfill to create a secure, long-lasting base.
4. Maintain Proper Drainage Around the Barn
Water pooling around your post bases can lead to soil erosion, frost heave, and rot all of which can destabilize your structure.
Tip: Make sure your site is graded to slope water away from the building. Adding gutters, downspouts, and gravel pads around the barn perimeter can dramatically reduce moisture issues.
